About ISKCON

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, was founded in 1966 in New York City by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. It belongs to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, a monotheistic tradition within Vedic culture that has been taught in an uninterrupted disciplic succession for over five centuries, since the time of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in 16th-century Bengal.

Today ISKCON comprises more than 500 temples, farm communities, and schools around the world, sharing the practice of Bhakti-yoga — the science of devotional service to Krishna — through the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, the study of scriptures such as the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, vegetarian prasadam (sanctified food), and community worship.

ISKCON Founder-Acharya

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada (1896–1977) was instructed by his own spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, to carry the teachings of Krishna consciousness to the English-speaking world. In 1965, at the age of 69, he sailed alone from Kolkata to New York aboard the cargo ship Jaladuta, carrying little more than a trunk of his translated books and a firm faith in his mission.

In July 1966 he founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in New York City. Over the following eleven years he circled the globe multiple times, established more than a hundred temples, farm communities, and schools, and translated and wrote commentary on dozens of Vaishnava scriptures — including Bhagavad-gita As It Is and Srimad-Bhagavatam — that remain the foundational texts studied at ISKCON centers, including ours, to this day. He is honored throughout ISKCON as its Founder-Acharya.
